Is it vital we start our puppies lives on the right track with training. The imprinting stage is considered a critical learning phase. During this phase they are particularly responsive to learning. The puppy program will teach you all basic commands and how to develop a obedient, confident, happy, independent, well balanced dog. Not all Puppy programs are equal, it's important you and your puppy learn quality, practical skills that will develop into real world abilities. We don't want to be taught to rely on food to get our dogs to do anything. Sure we use food to introduce skills. But then it's vital you are taught how to fade them away and still have the same level of control.
The program consists of
- 5 x 1hr group sessions from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at Jason Harris Dog Training Facility these are either on a Tues or Thurs depending on the program you join.
- Graduation certificate
This program teaches all basic commands and helps you improve any obedience skills your dog already has. Some dogs at this age have already developed behavioural issues that I will help you correct and teach you how to avoid more developing in the future.

Unlock your dog’s incredible sense of smell with our Scent Detection Program — a structured, science-based approach to learning that’s both engaging and rewarding. Designed for dogs of all breeds and experience levels, this program helps build focus, confidence, and teamwork between you and your dog.
Through guided exercises and positive reinforcement, you’ll learn how to:
Our program combines professional training techniques with a fun, supportive environment — perfect for pet owners who want to challenge their dogs while learning valuable new skills together. This program is designed to introduce individuals to the world of scent detection with their dogs, while also providing experienced dog owners new techniques and methods to enhance their dogs' current abilities. Participants will learn the initial steps of introducing a target odour, progressing to instructing their dogs on how to work independently and confidently. Dogs will be exposed to various searching styles, including ground searches, scent walls, and wheels. The objective of this program is to develop handler and dog teams capable of performing double-blind searches, where neither the dog nor the handler knows the location of the target.
Some target odours will be provided, however, participants are welcome to bring their own odours for their dogs to learn to detect including specific odours for competition purposes.
I will conduct seminars covering specific skills. These will be announced throughout the year as I offer them.
Some of the things covered are:
- In motion obedience
- Advanced commands
- Distance control
- Off lead training
- Reactive dog management

It can be a daunting job to take on a dog and develop it into a well trained dog. However it doesn't need to be, with the correct guidance it can be a lot less stressful more enjoyable and very rewarding.
Training shouldn't be frustrating for you or your dog, they are not complicated animals, its humans that make it seem so. They are instinctive, opportunistic, predatory animals even the cute little ones. If you let them, they will take advantage of you very quickly. Without a leader it is not clear what is expected of them. Everything should be binary, they can, or they can’t, no grey areas this is what creates issues. Dogs don’t take things personal when you ask something of them. They respect, understand, and need leadership in their life. This is what keeps control and helps them understand what is expected of them.
Being a former Military Police Dog Handler I have trained dogs to an exceptionally high standard. These are some of the methods and skills I use to teach you how to train your own dog.
The key to good training and handling is understanding how to communicate on your dog’s level. This is something I will teach you, and after mastering this, the responses and bond with your dog will improve exponentially.
Jason Harris Dog Training caters for all your dog needs from Doggy Day-Care, one on one training, puppy programs up to 8months, 8months and over program, behavioural training, assistance dog training, agility, equipment sales. We are your one stop shop for dogs.
A one on one dog training session is great way to fast track your way to correcting any behavioural problems or teach any specific obedience skills you want in your dog. The sessions are generally either 1hr or 90min and in this time we will work through what I call your "wish list". This is a list of things you come to me with that need correcting or teaching to your dog.
A few of factors that will determine the results you get are your handling ability, your dogs history of behaviour or training, how much effort you put in to teaching your dog.
Like anything we want to learn or change in our own lives it takes consistency, correct methods and patience. I guarantee you I will give you the skills, then it will be up you to apply them correctly.
It is not often that I see someone more once, because my aim is to give the skills needed to teach of correct behaviours in one session.
If you do feel you need a follow up, I often suggest a real world session. This is where we meet in public to improve on what I have already taught you.
Training your dog to an extremely high level as a working assistance dog is vital for the safety of you and your dog. Having a plan to achieve this is very important. I will help you train your dog from the very first command to the final result of passing the Public Access Test with your dog. The standard program is done over 12 months with 12 private sessions over this time. The pace of these being used will depend on each individual team. Sometimes we get together regularly at the start then they are spread out as skills improve. If more than 12 sessions are needed this can be catered for according to the help you need. In most cases if the owner does the consistent training between sessions 12 is enough.
All assistance dogs have to be able to give physical support to the handler. This can be done in the way of retrieving items, interrupting human behaviour's connected to PTSD, anxiety and more. The support exercises your dogs needs to do can be decided upon consultation prior to training. They can also be modified to suit your needs during the program. You will be taught how to progress with these exercises with your dog in between lessons with your trainer.
At the start sessions will be conducted in very controlled environments giving you and your dog the ability to learn without being to distracted. As the sessions progress we will train in gradually more challenging scenarios to give you the confidence to deal with any challenge that may arise.
Nearing the end of the program you will train in all environments including practice of the Public Access Test to ensure you pass this easily when you are ready.
What are the steps to getting my dog certified as an assistance dog?
The difference between Therapy and Assistance dogs
A therapy dog is different to an Assistance Dog. A therapy dog is a dog that helps a person through therapeutic intervention. To do this, the dog needs to be trained but, unlike Assistance Dogs, this training doesn’t meet the legal standards for public access rights.
Animal assisted therapies use therapy dogs in clinical settings, such as hospitals but also community settings like schools.
Unlike emotional dogs and therapy dogs, Assistance Dogs have public access rights.
Public access rights are a legal right that give an animal access to most public spaces pets normally wouldn’t be allowed. This includes shopping centres, buses, trains and more. It also includes flying with an Assistance Dog on local and international airlines.
Not only are Assistance Dogs trained to specific requirements but they also need to go through a public access tests.

My 5 week JHDT scent detection program is going to introduce new dogs to the world of scent detection and help owners of dogs that have already done scent work improve their skills and introduce new styles of training and searching.
You don't need previous experience to join the program but you do need a dog that has motivation. One of the main prerequisites is having a dog that has a very high drive for a ball, tug toy or food. One of these will be your dogs reward for searching successfully so we need dogs that want to work hard for their reward.
It is also important that an owner and dog works well together when training, basic obedience is important and as an owner that you know how to manage your dog well. The temperament of your dog should be confident and motivated. Having a well conditioned marker like YES is also an advantage coming into the program because this is what with let your dog they are correct in the responses.
Below is a link to a video teaching marker use in training.
